John and the coyote are challenging themselves to overcome their fear. John wanted to go East to the forbidden place. He was a priest and he wanted to go challenge his journey. The coyote was also challenging his braveness. He believed that he has the ability to kill the giant, just like John believing that he could go East because he was a priest. The settings of the two stories are quite priest. The settings of the two stories are quite similar. In the Waters of Babylon, John went to the sacred places where as the coyote went into the giant’s body. The settings may sound different but it’s really not. Both protagonists have their journey at places where others were afraid to go. There were people in the stories that advised the main characters not to go to those places, but neither of the main characters listened to the advises that were given. After reading both stories, I found out that both John and the coyote went into another person’s property. John went into God’s property where on the other hand the coyote went into the big monster’s property (his stomach). Both of them have a happy ending at the end.
